What is Outlast® technology?

Starting out as a thermo-regulator for spacesuits that are used by NASA astronauts, the Outlast® is a weaving technology making a difference by minimizing temperature fluctuations with specially certified products. Outlast® air-conditioning fibers and pillows and duvets using the Outlast® technology minimize and balance out temperature fluctuations. Products with this certificate are made from millions of capsules filled with a special wax, which can absorb and release high heat under their active surface.

Offering an air-conditioning effect in sleep products, Outlast® temperature regulation technology ensures a balanced environment. The skin is exposed to temperature changes during sleep. The body naturally releases excess heat into the environment and sweats to cool itself down. Using the Outlast® technology, the patented Thermocules trap this heat. When the body starts to cool down, the trapped heat is released back.

  • This is how the Outlast® works: The body heat, which is the heat source, is transferred to the Outlast® thermo material. This is micro encapsulated wax, which liquefies under heat. Wax is securely stored in micro capsules. According to the laws of physics, the temperature does not further increase when the physical state shifts from solid to liquid. In a way, thermal energy can be used to overcome the physical state of the wax. This is when the Outlast®’s effect is felt: Body heat no longer heats the micro climate, but instead melts the wax. The Outlast® thermo-material acts as a heat buffer, reducing the user’s heat peaks significantly. This prevents sweat formation by up to 48%*, providing better comfort.
